Assessment of the ecological status of Mediterranean French coastal waters as required by the Water Framework Directive using the Posidonia oceanica Rapid Easy Index: PREI ArchiMer
Gobert, Sylvie; Sartoretto, Stephane; Rico-raimondino, Valerie; Andral, Bruno; Chery, Aurelia; Lejeune, Pierre; Boissery, Pierre.
This paper describes the PREI (Posidonia oceanica Rapid Easy Index), a method used to assess the ecological status of seawater along Mediterranean French coasts. The PREI was drawn up according to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD 2000/60/EC) and was tested on 24 and 18 stations in PACA (Provence-Alpes-Cotes d'Azur) and Corsica, respectively. The PREI is based on five metrics: shoot density, shoot leaf surface area, E/L ratio (epiphytic biomass/leaf biomass), depth of lower limit, and type of this lower limit. The 42 studied stations were classified in the first four levels of status: high, good, moderate and poor. The PREI values ranged between 0.280 and 0.847; this classification is in accordance with our field knowledge and with our...

Environmental DNA metabarcoding reveals and unpacks a biodiversity conservation paradox in Mediterranean marine reserves ArchiMer
Boulanger, Emilie; Loiseau, Nicolas; Valentini, Alice; Arnal, Véronique; Boissery, Pierre; Dejean, Tony; Deter, Julie; Guellati, Nacim; Holon, Florian; Juhel, Jean-baptiste; Lenfant, Philippe; Manel, Stéphanie; Mouillot, David.
Although we are currently experiencing worldwide biodiversity loss, local species richness does not always decline under anthropogenic pressure. This conservation paradox may also apply in protected areas but has not yet received conclusive evidence in marine ecosystems. Here, we survey fish assemblages in six Mediterranean no-take reserves and their adjacent fishing grounds using environmental DNA (eDNA) while controlling for environmental conditions. We detect less fish species in marine reserves than in nearby fished areas. The paradoxical gradient in species richness is accompanied by a marked change in fish species composition under different managements. This dissimilarity is mainly driven by species that are often overlooked by classical visual...

Fine-Scale Cartography of Human Impacts along French Mediterranean Coasts: A Relevant Map for the Management of Marine Ecosystems ArchiMer
Holon, Florian; Mouquet, Nicolas; Boissery, Pierre; Bouchoucha, Marc; Delaruelle, Gwenaelle; Tribot, Anne-sophie; Deter, Julie.
Ecosystem services provided by oceans and seas support most human needs but are threatened by human activities. Despite existing maps illustrating human impacts on marine ecosystems, information remains either large-scale but rough and insufficient for stakeholders (1 km² grid, lack of data along the coast) or fine-scale but fragmentary and heterogeneous in methodology. The objectives of this study are to map and quantify the main pressures exerted on near-coast marine ecosystems, at a large spatial scale though in fine and relevant resolution for managers (one pixel = 20 x 20 m). It focuses on the French Mediterranean coast (1,700 km of coastline including Corsica) at a depth of 0 to 80 m. After completing and homogenizing data presently available under...

Andral, Bruno; Cambert, Harold; Turquet, Jean; Ropert, Michel; Duval, Magali; Vermenot, Coralie; Boissery, Pierre; Talec, Pascal.

Live benthic foraminiferal faunas from the French Mediterranean Coast: Towards a new biotic index of environmental quality ArchiMer
Barras, Christine; Jorissen, Frans J.; Labrune, Celine; Andral, Bruno; Boissery, Pierre.
In this study, living (Rose Bengal stained) foraminiferal faunas from 31 stations along the entire French Mediterranean Sea coast except Corsica have been analysed. In the context of the Water Framework Directive, the aim was to develop a biotic index to evaluate the benthic ecosystem quality. Therefore, different faunal parameters (diversity indices, wall structure proportion, and indicative species groups) have been tested to determine their relevance as indicators of environmental conditions. The best results are obtained with a biotic index based on the relative proportion of stress-tolerant taxa. For ecosystem quality evaluation, it is essential to distinguish between natural and anthropogenic eutrophication phenomena. In order to do so, we applied a...

Monitoring Marine Habitats With Photogrammetry: A Cost-Effective, Accurate, Precise and High-Resolution Reconstruction Method ArchiMer
Marre, Guilhem; Holon, Florian; Luque, Sandra; Boissery, Pierre; Deter, Julie.
Underwater photogrammetry has been increasingly used to study and monitor the three-dimensional characteristics of marine habitats, despite a lack of knowledge on the quality and reliability of the reconstructions. More particularly, little attention has been paid to exploring and estimating the relative contribution of multiple acquisition parameters on the model resolution (distance between neighbor vertices), accuracy (closeness to true positions/measures) and precision (variability of positions/measures). On the other hand, some studies used expensive or cumbersome camera systems that can restrict the number of users of this technology for the monitoring of marine habitats. This study aimed at developing a simple and cost-effective protocol able to...

Sauzade, Didier; Andral, Bruno; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Pairaud, Ivane; Verney, Romaric; Zebracki, Mathilde; Cadiou, Jean-francois; Boissery, Pierre.
Marine pollution is one of the priority issues of the Mediterranean environment. This pollution comes from multiple sources including large coastal cities which are considered as hot-spots. The METROC project objective is to assess gross and net chemical contaminant flows related to large Mediterranean coastal cities, with a first application to the Marseilles area. The methodology consists of i) assessing the present state of the chemical contamination of the coastal environment; ii) assessing inputs to the sea from sewage, small rivers and storm water run-off; and iii) modelling the fate of some key contaminants, in order to attempt to establish a balance between inputs and exports towards the open sea. This short article presents a synthesis on these...

Taxonomic and functional diversity increase the aesthetic value of coralligenous reefs ArchiMer
Tribot, Anne-sophie; Mouquet, Nicolas; Villeger, Sebastien; Raymond, Michel; Hoff, Fabrice; Boissery, Pierre; Holon, Florian; Deter, Julie.
The aesthetic value of landscapes contributes to human well-being. However, studies which have investigated the link between biodiversity and ecosystem services have not taken aesthetic value into account. In this study we evaluated how the aesthetics of coralligenous reefs, a key marine ecosystem in the Mediterranean, is perceived by the general public and how aesthetic preferences are related to biodiversity facets (taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversities). We performed both biodiversity measures and online-surveys of aesthetic perception on photographic quadrats sampled along the French Mediterranean coast. Our results show that species richness and functional richness have a significant positive effect on aesthetic value. Most of the...

Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Guyomarch, Julien; Tapie, Nathalie; Munaron, Dominique; Budzinski, Helene; Andral, Bruno; Boissery, Pierre.
